Description

I tried to communicate with my Yaesu FT-8900 but for some reason it won't work.
When I use communication port test programs, I can see there is no conflict or error with the port (now used COMM Port 4).

The problem is that I cannot upload to Radio (it is grayed out) and downloading from the radio shows an error (Failed to read header).

I have to be honest, I have no exact understanding how to perform the upload and download process and I cannot really find any instructions on the web.
Using CHIRP with my Baofeng works like a charm with a different cable.

Here's my info what I use:

  • CHIRP version 0.3.1
  • Yaesu FT-8900R
  • USB to Mini DIN cable: Maxton Model RPC-Y7800-U
  • Operating System: Windows7 64-bits
  • Prolific Driver used: V3.2.0.0 Date: 7/31/2007 (driver 3.4.62.293 crashes my FT-8900)

Any suggestions what I am doing wrong?
Thanks !

Did you read and understand the Beginners Guide, especially the "note for Yaesu radios" section? It sounds like you never initiated a clone on your Yaesu (you do this from the radio, not the computer). You can find the procedure for this in your FT-8900 manual.

For those struggling how to program the Yaesu FT-8900 (just like I did), here's what I found and works for me:

  1. On the Yaesu, press the left V/M button on the front panel and power it up
  2. You will hear five times, an in tone height increasing beep to confirm the mode
  3. The Display shows: SETMOD RESET
  4. Change the menu to CLONE START by rotating the right top knob 5 times clockwise
  5. Click on the SET button (blank button in the center of the Yaesu front panel (you will hear a beep)
  6. the Yaesu will restart automatically and will now display the text CLONE
  7. In CHIRP, select Download From Radio under the Radio pull down menu
  8. Configure and click on the OK button that appears to start receiving Data from the Yaesu
  9. On the Yaesu, press the V/M button on the front panel to activate the transmit mode ( you will see the text CLONE -TX- on the Yaesu, indicating it is transmitting the Data (the Yaesu will return to the CLONE menu when done)

After editing all the entries, here's how to save it to the Yaesu:

  1. In CHIRP, choose Upload to Radio under the Radio menu
  2. On the Yaesu, press the Low button to start receiving
  3. In CHIRP, click on the OK button to start transmitting

When done, the Yaesu beeps and returns to the CLONE mode and CHIRP will close the Clone Progress dialog box.

I hope this explanation helps.
Restart the Yaesu and enjoy!

I'm glad you were able to solve your problem!

By the way, Chirp development builds later than Oct 9, 2013 present a prompt with these instructions when initiating an upload.
