Just FYI, in the near future a number of both of these types of radios are going to hit the govt surplus federal-state-local market because now most of them will need P25 Phase II. Most them are P25 Phase I now but, as far as I know they cannot be upgraded to Phase II.
My point is right now, they are appearing on the EBay Market anywhere from 100 to 350 dollars which given the quality of the radio and
P25, DES, and other features will be a huge boost to the P25 expansion on amateur 2 meter channels. The mobile/base 5300 series uses
EF Johnson PC Config RSS versions 1.28 to 2.14 and the same with the 5100 Handheld series. There are versions for VHF 136 - 174, UHF,
800 Mhz. which all look the same but obviously the boards are different. These are extensively used now by Federal agencies ( US. Forest,
BLM, USAF, US Army Corp of Engineers, Civil Air Patrol among others) and many state forestry and wildfire management agencies. These were
early adopters of P25 in the late 1990's.
