Description

Chirp doesn't seem to work using the Baofeng driver software off the http://www.powerphone.com.cn/en/ website. Their program works Ok but isn't nearly as friendly as Chirp. Hoping that Chirp gets updated to handle this radio.

John,

Hope no more. CHIRP has supported the Baofeng UV-B5 and UV-B6 in the daily builds since early April.

As far as CHIRP not working with the driver that you downloaded from the Baofeng website, you didn't provide much useful information that could be used to help you with.

Which operating system are you running?
Which version of CHIRP do you have installed?
What error messages, if any, are you getting?

Since the driver on the Baofeng website is for Windows XP and Windows 2000, I'm going to guess that you have Windows XP.

Are you getting the "application configuration is incorrect" when you try to run CHIRP? If so, then you probably need to install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package discussed on the CHIRP FAQ page.

If that isn't it, please reply with a little more detail.

The version is CHIRP 0.3.1 I am using a Compaq laptop with the Vista operating system. I also tried it with similar results on an XP PC. The error message I get is that "The Radio Did Not Respond". The other thing I notice is that CHIRP's popup box that looks for the COM port the port, and the Baofeng radio, but is looking for either a UV-3R or UV-5R radio.

Does that help?

Thanks,

John, you should download latest daily build from http://trac.chirp.danplanet.com/chirp_daily/
That has support for Baofeng UV-B5.

Driver is just for USB-Serial adapter. It has nothing to do with device itself. If driver works with one program it will surely work with others too.

You are using the latest stable release and it does not support the Baofeng UV-B5/UV-B6. The Baofeng UV-B5 is supported in the "daily builds".

http://trac.chirp.danplanet.com/chirp_daily (the newest builds are at the bottom)

The "Radio Did Not Respond" error is normal since the radio model that you selected was not a UV-B5 and that radio model did not respond.

Thanks Jim.
I d/l'd the daily build, plugged it in, and read the existing program out of the radio. I edited what was there, adding some 470 channels and d/l'd the new file back to the radio. Worked great!

I made a couple more changes and couldn't send it to the radio. The error message was "unexpected response from radio." I realized then that the radio was on one of the 470 channels in memory slot 99. I tried changing it to channel 1 and it worked flawlessly.

I appreciate your assistance and all your work building and developing CHIRP. This work much better than the Baofeng program.

Thanks!

  • Status changed from New to Closed
  • Target version set to 0.4.0
  • Chirp Version changed from 0.3.0 to daily

It was determined that the Baofeng UV-B5/B6 radios will sometimes change their 'ack' response when some of the settings are changed. This issue has been addressed.
