Baofeng UV-17R ham radio not working with chirp

Description

After several attempts to program my Baofeng UV-17R ham radio with chirp, I have given up. I have tried the UV-17, the UV-17pro options to read from my radio and nothing works. The radio shows a sync icon indicating that its talking to the computer, but then I get an error message . I am using a baofeng USB cable, then I tried a Btech usb cable. The computer recognizes the usb port with the cable.
Any ideas on how to fix this problem?

I hope I'm replying back correctly as this is my first time doing so. It looks like your COM port is wrong. I think that's an Intel Serial-Over-LAN port.

Hi Mark, thanks for the response. I tried all usb port options shown in the chirp menu, and got the same results. I also looked up the usb ports shown in my computer's device manager with usb cable attached to verify which usb port was recognized by my computer. This is my first time reporting an issue too. What is weird is that my HT display screen will show that its in communication mode with the computer, but no data is uploaded. Any other ideas?

To me it seems like a driver issue. When you have your radio plugged into the computer, do you see any other com ports or unknown devices in device manager?

Hello again. Here are screen shots of the device manager and chirp. the driver for the usb cable us up to date. there is not a baofeng model UV-17R in the drop down menu, someone wrote in comment somewhere else that the UV-17pro worked for them with limited options. I could not get either the UV-15 or the UV-15Pro to work for me.

The screen on my radio flashed the computer connection symbol when I was using the uv-17pro when I tried to download from the radio, but then I got an error message on chirp "not the amount of data we want".

I wanted to add, I'm having the exact same problem. Brand new Updated UV-17R. Latest Chirp (2023-12-23). I follow the directions, i.e. plug in cable to PC, plug into radio, turn on radio, try to download.

I get the same "not the amount of data we want" error.

Will be glad to help test patches/bug fixes. Hoping we can get this resolved quickly, otherwise I'll probably return the radio. No way I'm adding 999 frequencies by hand LOL.

Wow, thanks for the comments about your similar problems. I am hoping some software engineer will take notice and find a solution to this chirp software program. My radio was advertised as programable with Chirp, one of the reason why I purchased the radio because I like to use chirp to program other radios I have.

my chirp debug report is attached. I tried this download with both the UV-17 and UV-17pro models. Only the UV-17pro option allowed the radio to show a PC data connection icon when I initiated the data transfer from the radio to the computer.
What is the behavior you are seeing? When trying to read the first file from my radio, I got an error message the chirp could not find the amount of data needed.
What is the behavior you were expecting? I was expecting to be able to download a image file from the new radio to be able to modify it.
Can you reproduce the problem all the time? Yes.
What are the steps required to reproduce the problem? Open chirp. connect the usb cable to the radio and computer. turn on the radio. Set the port and radio manufacturer and model in the read from radio command. Start the command. The radio shows it is communicating with the laptop. The error message in chirp appears.
Is this specific to a certain radio model (driver) or something that you can reproduce with another radio? Only with the Baofeng UV-17R radio.

I've not seen that type of COM port before. However assuming that it is OK...

  1. Does the factory software work? If it doesn't the problem is most likely not CHIRP.
  2. Is the programming cable fully inserted into the radio? The deeper than normal socket well causes the strain relief of the right-angle plug to contact the side of the case before the socket is fully inserted. You have to take steps to eliminate this interference.

I have some programming cables with plenty of clearance and some that don't. Instead of cutting away the interfering parts of the plug like some, I made some short extension cables to eliminate the interference.

Could the firmware be different? I've got 2 17Rs and they both show the following:

VERSION     45
Firmware:V1.11
Hardware:V01

I also have a Pro GPS model that shows the following:

Radio:100
Firmware:Ver1.27
Hardware:Ver1.30

All of these have worked correctly with CHIRP. I'm running Linux on a Raspberry Pi, but I don't think that should make a difference.

My UV17R shows this: firmware V1.11 Hardware V01 I tried the factory software and could not get that to work. I will play around with the USB cables I have as you suggested.

An update...

I saw a new version of Chirp released today, Jan 11, 2024. Downloaded and tested it, same issue. I then went to Baofeng's site and downloaded their software, same issue. Finally I gave Mikkor (I think that was the site) a try, still no luck.

I thought it might be a Windows issue, so jumped on my Intel based Macbook Pro running the latest MacOS and downloaded the latest CHIRP for it. Again, still no luck, errored out when communicating.

I am using an original Baofeng cable, by the way.

I tried one other thing, entering a frequency into a memory slot using the front panel, thinking perhaps it just needed a nudge internally in the radio to create whatever files it was looking for. Didn't make a difference though.

I'm starting to think the error is with the radios themselves. Didn't Baofeng test this? There are so many people I'm seeing with this issue I'm shocked it got past Baofeng.

At this point though, I'm fed up and I've decided to just return it and get my money back.

Robert, thank you for your information on what you have tried. I am in the same situation as you, and am using a baofeng usb cable and I also entered a repeater channel by hand on the radio to tryr and encourage a sync with no luck in getting the radio to talk with Chirp. I have given up. David
