Hi Eric, i think i have a simple patch for this, but as I do not have this model, we'll need your help in testing/confirmation that this work before committing this to chirp.
To help me test this, download the attached tm281.py and launch chirp.
- enable developer mode: help -> check enable developer functions
- load this module: file -> load module, point to the tm281.py you downloaded
- open radio communication as usual but select TM-281 as radio model from list
- perform any testing, download/upload, modifications etc.
If you close chirp, you will have to repeat step 2 again to use this modified candidate.
Please let me know how it goes, and I'll submit a patch to chirp.

Wow! that was incredible response time! I wasn't expecting that. Thanks.
The first steps have gone well. I downloaded the file, opened Chirp, loaded the module, then connected and started the Kenwood TM-281A. I asked Chirp to read from the radio and instead of immediately telling me that it was an unsupported model, it did read all the current channels. I saved it to a CSV file and the closed it all down. I'll play with the CSV later today and then tonight I'll see if I can upload my changes.
Thanks again. You're awesome. ERC - KI6JZL

From what I can see it's working just fine with the new module loaded. I can read from the radio, then load my CSV file and since it's in live mode, it writes all my new channels. All is well. Is there anything specific that you need me to check to get the seal of approval? Thanks again for your amazingly prompt assistance. I was hoping to be able to reprogram my new Kenwood before this Saturday since we're having a local disaster drill and emergency preparedness fair. Now it'll be all ready thanks to your help! Thanks, ERC aka KI6JZL

Good, there's nothing specific to test but please double check that boundaries limits are correct: I mean frequency ranges, memory max number, label supported chars and length etc.
More important: go on using it ;)
If any problem arises please open a new specific issue.
Meanwhile I'll send the update to developers list for inclusion in upcoming daily builds.
Tnx for your help
