I read the instructions above:

Description

Using a new (ought to be brand new ...) ver HDBF230.
This radio/firmware takes 7 characters in 'name' field, chirp is only allowing only 6. This has an oddment that on pre-programmed channels (say from Baofeng's equivalent software) the 7th character is retained by the radio and never overwritten/cleared. This leads to some odd names now in my set and may need me to investigate further to see where that coruption comes from.
The ower-on message field (1) hasn't worked, I think because chip had allowed a "/" but the radio says no. Again, I need to play further to prove (it may be that this field isn't really displayable).

The last paragraph written should read: The Power-on message ...

  • this isn't the "/", it seems the radio is ignoring the (any) overwrite/update allowed by the chirp field.

Latest info.
The VIP software allows 7-character names (although fewer 'special' characters (generally just A-Z,a-z,0-9,spc?). This would be really good if fixable.
The VIP software allows both message fields to be updated and this 'sticks'. A re-read into Chirp sucessfully updates the two fields (in Settings/Other setting/POM1 & POM2). But Chirp is unable to write these fields back into the radio.
