Description

Hello, I have a UV-5R that is several years old. I want to connect to Chirp but when I go to Radio - Download from Radio, there are no options assigned for the PORT. I have tried numerous times as well as searched for a port setting but nothing. Is there a way to update the software, could that be the issue? I apologize terribly, I am not tech savvy and am older. Seeking help to get the channels set in case of emergency in the future. I have attached a snapshot of what I see. Thank you!

CHIRP runs fine on (and always has) Windows 11. What you are experiencing is not a CHIRP issue.

The problem is that you don't have a working connection between the radio and computer. Without it, CHIRP (or any programming software) cannot program your radio. In this case, I would say it was a safe bet that the device driver that was installed by Windows 11 is not compatible with the USB-to-Serial chip in your programming cable.

Most likely if you open up device manager, you will see an entry under Ports (COM & LPT) that shows PL2303HXA PHASED OUT SINCE 2012, PLEASE CONTACT YOUR SUPPLIER. This indicates that your programming cable has a Prolific type chip inside that is no longer supported in the latest device driver that is provided to Microsoft by the Prolific company. See attached screen captures.

If you want your current programming cable to work, you will have to download, install and select the older Prolific v3.2.0.0 driver (this is what I do here). A link for downloading the driver and instructions for installing and selecting it are available on the Miklor.com " Drivers and USB Cables":https://www.miklor.com/COM/UV_Drivers.php page.

If you don't want to install and select an older driver in your Windows 11 computer, then you will need to come up with a programming cable that utilizes a USB-to-Serial chip from a chip vendor other than Prolific (FTDI, Silicon Labs, WCH, etc). The FTDI chip is popular.
