CHIRP

Program an air band channel using the keypad. There is no choice for AM in the radio's menu system. Just NARROW (NFM) and WIDE (FM). The radio automatically selects AM mode when a frequency being between 108 MHz and 136 MHz is keyed into a VFO (or programmed into a memory).

CHIRP works in the same manner as manual programming the radio does. When you program an air band frequency in CHIRP, you just ignore the Mode setting just like the radio is going to ignore it. The radio will automatically select AM (and display 'AM' on the screen) when an air band frequency is programmed into a memory or stored in a VFO.

I haven't tried my 5RM on air band yet, but if it is like the 5RX that I just got, it is going to sound terrible. These low cost radios don't have true AM receivers. They use slope detection to receive AM signals and are going to sound bad. You need one of the 1000 channel Baofeng radios like the UV-17Pro GPS to get true AM and good sounding audio when monitoring the air band. My UV-17Pro GPS sounds as good as my scanner when receiving air band signals.
