Bug #11191
closedTalkpod A36Plus 8W; Failed to Clone
100%
Description
Getting "Failed to Clone: Radio returned unknown identification string" when trying to download from the radio. Appears this is a new firmware on the radio I just got, showing version 1.6. I know there was a bug issue for this already, but it is marked as closed and the issue persists on the latest version of Chirp. The old issue was for firmware 1.4, currently I am on 1.6.

Would you make a copy of the attached menu list and update it to match the menus in your radio? This is so I can tell if there are anything besides the identification string that needs to be changed. Thanks.

Sure, here you go. There are a few additional items in this version and some things are in a different order.

OK. There are 3 new setting available. I will assume for the time being that the rest of the settings are the same and are all stored in the same memory locations as the previous firmware versions. So I will need your help with understanding what these new settings do and where they are stored in memory.
First, I need to you test the attached driver module. It should be able to download from your radio. See that it does and then save the first successful download to a CHIRP Radio Images (*.img) file to be kept as a backup. You could attach a copy of it here for safe keeping.
Instructions for how to use the test driver module can be found here: LoadingTestModules
Next I will need you to create 3 pairs of 'image' files. A pair for each of the new menu settings. One with the setting set to On and another with it set to Off . Name them so that I know which menu and setting that it represents (Talkpod_A36plus_8w_menu20_on.img, Talkpod_A36plus_8w_menu20_off.img, etc). The settings that need to have this done are as follows...
- 20 SINGLE MODE
- 48 UNLOCK SW CH
- 49 DIS S TABLE
I assume that menu 20 switches the display from a dual display line display (Off) to a single display line display (On). Please correct me if I am wrong and let me know what it really does. It would be appreciated if you could also figure out and give me an idea what menu 48 and menu 49 does. Thanks in advance for your help with this.

The test driver worked great. Attached are the img files requested. Menu 20 (on) does change the display to only show line 1, line 2 simply just says NO NAME. However, this only works if you set MENU 18 (TDR) to Off. With MENU 18 set to On, Menu 20 has no effect. It is not obvious to me what menu 48 or 49 are doing.

Thank you for the image files. I have now added the 3 additional settings. Would you verify that Single Display Mode indeed switches the display from dual-line to single-line? Also do you have any guesses for what the expanded names for UNLOCK SW CH and DIS S TABLE would be? I would like to replace them with more descriptive names if we could come up with them. I looked at the OEM software but I didn't see their equivalent choices anywhere.

So it doesn't actually change the display to single line, there are still 2 lines, but line 2 is just disabled and says NO NAME. Changing the channel only changes line 1. I can attach a picture of the display if it would be helpful.
UNLOCK SW CH - When this is set to on, when you lock the keypad you can still change the channel on whatever bank was selected (A/B) when it was locked. When its set to off, when you lock the keypad the channel buttons are also locked.
DIS S TABLE - I can't figure this out. I emailed Talkpod to see if they could tell me.

Update, I just figured it out. It turns on/off the s meter in the display. So with it on, you see the signal (s9+30, etc). With it off you don't see that on the display.
