Description

Trying to "Download from Radio" on a new Baofeng UV-5RA. Had to use a Windows 7 machine so the USB cable would be recognized. Got the right COM port, followed the instructions on how to connect-then-turn on the HT. CHIRP puts the HT into transmit mode and the software reports that there's no communication with the HT. I quit when the antenna base started to warm up. Also tried this several times. Is it the USB cable, the HT, or the software? Any insights? I just downloaded the daily version from today, by the way.

I had this issue on Windows8 with my UV-B6 when the drivers weren't correct for the cable.

Installing the correct drivers for the cable fixed it, and everything works correctly now.

Well, I have tried this on both a Windows 7 a Windows 8 and even a Windows 8.1 machine. Same thing each time. I have now ordered from Amazon a new USB cable, though the cable I have been using doesn't report failures on the Windows 7 machine. Sort of the "back up and try again" approach.

This is definitely a radio/cable/driver issue and not CHIRP-related. We can't cause those radios to transmit, even if we wanted to.

The problem is generally something along the lines of leaking DTR pin current into the radio that causes the PTT transistor to think you want it to transmit. DTR generally goes high when an application opens the serial port (which is the right behavior).

I'm sure you can find more information about this (very common with the chinese radios) problem on the UV-5R yahoo group.

Thanks!
