Forgot to specify the narrowband channel... Just in case it wasn't clear:

Ch 1 - 144.010 AM
Ch 2 - 144.010 WFM
Ch 3 - 144.010 NFM

Same issue with the Kenwood TH-F6.

I see that the TH-F6 uses FMN instead of NFM. Maybe this is the source of the problem?

I might have found the issue with the Yaesu VX-8 driver code, it's a single bit in memory for each channel (Yaesu calls narrow-band FM "half deviation"; what they call "NFM" is regular channel bandwidth for ham bands FM, as opposed to WFM, bandwidth used by broadcast stations). I might be able to fix this once I have a working programming environment for Chirp.

As for the Kenwood TH-F6 mentioned in post no. 3, there is no solution. Unfortunately that radio does not allow to set narrow band FM per channel: the user can only turn it on or off globally. For that radio, you must program the channels in full bandwidth, and either enable narrow band FM globally (and risk being received with too soft audio), or keep it on regular bandwidth and keep your mouth farther away from the mike when transmitting on narrow-band channels so that you don't over-deviate. Not a very good solution, but it works.
