Wenlock,

If the attached picture (screencapture from my Linux Mint 17.2 computer) is what your "blank window" looks like, then CHIRP is working as it should. At this point, you would download from your properly connected CHIRP supported radio (Radio -> Download From Radio), or load a previously saved CHIRP Radio Image (*.img) file (File -> Open).

Take a look at the "CHIRP Beginners_Guide":http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Beginners_Guide

Hi Jim,

My bad, I should have stated there is no menu on my window unlike your screenshot.

The radio is connecting OK as I have the Icom software running in Wine and can program the radio from there.

Thanks again,

Wenlock,

This is a long shot, delete or rename the "chirp.config" file. It is in the hidden "~/.chirp" folder.

I deleted the config file but still no menu.

It does tell me there is a newer version but when I try to install it tells me this version is already installed.

I'll raise a seperate bug report for that if you prefer.

Just trying to look at the log to see if that tells me anything

Thanks

Aha,

/usr/bin/chirpw:146: GtkWarning: gtk_window_realize_icon: assertion 'info->icon_pixmap == NULL' failed
a.show()
Server reports version 20151020 is available

I'd say this is why the menu is missing, but how to fix?

Hi,

I found this link which seems to explain the issue, seems that GTK doesn't like calling the menu dialog before the window has been realized.

Hi,

Can I ask if there's been any progress yet?

Thanks

Might try the Windows version under Wine for the time being.

Windows version works, though slightly awkward to launch as it doesn't create a windows desktop shortcut so Wine doesn't create a Wine symlink on the Ubuntu desktop

Wenlock,

Seems to me if there was an issue with CHIRP and Ubuntu 14.04 it would have been discovered and dealt with in April 2014 when this version of Ubuntu was released.

I don't use Ubuntu. I moved to Linux Mint when Ubuntu changed their desktop interface. Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu and CHIRP works fine.

Just the same, I installed Ubuntu 14.04 in a virtual machine. Yes CHIRP comes up with a blank screen. It appears that you have to hover the mouse over the Ubuntu menu bar and the CHIRP menu bar appears. Is this what you are missing?

I'd never have looked for that! Unusual to have the menu in that Ubuntu menu bar, but there it is. The screenshot you attached is not from Ubuntu? It shows a menu in the Chirp window.

Could the docs be updated to point out the the menu location in Unbuntu please?

Still think a subtle difference in Gtk that makes the menu appear in the bar instead of the Chirp window.

Thanks

Wenlock,

I couldn't do any additional testing this morning because I had to leave for work. I've did some additional testing and research now that I am back home.

You can double click the "Panel" (the bar at the top) to change the CHIRP application to a window with borders that you can resize.

If you load LibreOffice Writer or LibreOffice Calc the "top" application's menu bar appears "Unity" menu bar. If you double click the "panel" (the bar at the top of the window", it will expand to full screen and behave exactly the same way that CHIRP does when it was launched for the first time.

This is apparently how the Unity window manager in Ubuntu works.

This is apparently called "the global menu bar" The global menu bar places application menus at the top of a user's screen rather than within the application itself.

See this "ARS Technica article":http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2014/02/ubuntu-desktop-moving-application-menus-back-into-application-windows/ for how to move the menus back to the application windows.

Thanks Jim, that fixed the issue of the menu location.

I've created a new bug report as it appears to be downloading more memories than the radio possesses.
