Description

Hello together,

recently I changed my OS to Vista, because SP3 of XP made trouble with viewing Internet pages.
I installed Chirp on the new platform and it won't load.
One can see the hardisk operating, but no window opens and even the icon of Chirp is not the get used one. Only a simple icon for .exe-files shown in the menu.
What is the problem?
Maybe someone knows the solution.

Thanks,
de Ben, DL4ZAB

Does it get far enough to create a debug.log? Please post your debug.log.

I checked the entire Chirp folder and found no file "debug.log".

It's possible that it's failing before it's able to begin a log. Just to make sure you are checking the correct folder, please follow the instructions at How To Report Issues:

Go to Start->Run and type "%APPDATA%\CHIRP". Your debug.log file will be in the folder that opens.

Could you be encountering known bug #272 (special characters in your username)?

-Hundreds- Thousands of people use Chirp on Vista with no problems, so there must be something unique about your system.

Yep, this is a dupe of #272. It has to do with UTF-8 characters in pathnames on Windows. None of the developers are real "windowsy" people and have thus far been at a loss for addressing it. Can you confirm that you have some "strange" character in, say, your username?

Is this the name I entered when installing the OS?
I am admin of my computer and I typed my full name "Bernd Peilstöcker".
I know, that the character "ö" doesn't exist in English, so I registered with the equivalent of"ö" = "oe".

I just changed my Vista-Account in "Bernd P." to avoid the "forbidden" characters.
After this was done, I restarted the system.
Do I have to uninstall Chirp and reinstall it to have effects?

No, unfortunately just changing your username won't do it here, since that doesn't change the path. Reinstalling chirp will not help.

Try creating another user without the special character, log in as that user and try to use CHIRP. If that works, then you're suffering the problem we think you are. I can't give you an ETA for resolution, but hopefully that would provide you with a workaround for the time being.

So that's all ....!
Thank You very much indeed for guidance through the trouble.
Chirp works now.
5 Stars for this support!

Since we've confirmed this is the same as #272, I'm going to close this issue. Please feel free to post any more information you think may be useful in #272.
