CHIRP

I swapped chat this evening with the IRC-friend that was having trouble. He said, for other reasons, he wasn't actually able to run the 'Live CD' but got his radio sorted out otherwise. So, no, I can NOT assert that the auto-update aspect of the script isn't working. It was purely my observation that the SF project appeared to have not been updated in two years.

I can confirm this is not working anymore. I have been searching high and low trying to figure out why I can not get the Chirp_LiveCD_6Feb14.iso to successfully update Chirp and run. I have installed it on two different USB drives a few times and it will run Chirp just fine until I update it. then it will not launch and gives no error codes. I have a Baofeng BF-F8HP that is not included in the older version of Chirp included on 6Feb14. I've tried using the Chirp updater included on the desktop, and on my last attempt I tried adding the PPA code and running the update manually. The code was successfully installed and shows that it was updated. I rebooted the system on each attempt with no change. Anyone else having this problem or able to get this to work?

I believe after running the update script, CHIRP is installed in a different location from were it was originally so the existing launcher(s) no longer work. I believe that a while back I tracked down were it was installed and created a new launcher and all was fine.

That being said, there may be another solution. I just installed a persistent Linux Mint 18.3 Xfce on a 4GB flash drive using unetbootin and assigning 1024 MB of persistent space. After using terminal to add the snapshot repository, install the latest daily build and add the "user" to the dialout group (as described on the "Running_Under_Linux" page), I rebooted and was able to easily program my BTech UV-5X3.

I was able to get it running on Xubuntu 18.04 LTS with the code provided here. Just wish I would have known about the ChirpLiveCD issue to begin with. I went hunting for the new launcher in the ChirpLiveCD to no avail. Good to know Mint 18.3 works too.

For what it's worth, after running the Chirp updater, the new chirpw is located at /usr/bin/chirpw. The updated Chirp can be launched by starting a new Terminal and entering the command gksudo /usr/bin/chirpw
