Description

Greetings all,

I have not been able to adjust the squelch (service settings) on radios showing the following.
Firmware Message 1: HN5RV01
Firmware Message 2: 1

The upload was stopped because the firmware version of the image (HN5RV011 ) does not match that of the radio (HN5RV011■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■)" [except the squares had "X's in them].

I am able add/remove/edit channels and upload to the radio, but as soon as I change service settings, I get the error message above.

Thanks in advance for any help.

The problem is that Baofeng didn't fully populate the 14 bytes of the firmware version with regular alpha numeric characters. They normally pad this area with "space" characters when this area isn't full. What Baofeng did in these latest radios with HN5RV01 firmware was to pad out the remaining characters with hex 0xFF.

What is happening is CHIRP sanitizes these 14 bytes so the firmware version can be displayed on the screen of the Settings -> Other Settings menu panel. As soon as any setting is changed, this sanitized version gets written to the image. So unfortunately the firmware version of the image no longer matches the firmware version in the radio.

My first attempt at fixing this failed.

  • % Done changed from 0 to 100
  • Model affected changed from RH5R to UV-5R
  • Platform changed from Windows to All

A patch has been submitted to address this issue for Baofeng UV-5R radios and its many variants. A similar patch would be desirable in drivers for other radio brands/models.
