I am interested in this working. Can I support in any way? I am a software engineer, but I don't know much about the chirp source code.

The FT-1D is supported - can you please test whether the selection "FT-1DR" works with the FT-1XDR?
If it doesn't, please provide a debug log, and we probably can make it work in little time.
Let us know in case you're using a European model.
