Description

I installed the 20170618 daily build (it was the newest build that I could find the matching SHA1SUM for even though the 20160627 version was available) of chirp on an Arch Linux system. I was able to successfully program a Baofeng UV-5RV2 and a Kenwood TH-F6A with it. I could connect to the radio and successfully download and save the image stored in the radio, however attempting to upload the image fails with a 'CL ERR' on the radio display and then upon a power reset it says "CLEARED" and all the memory locations are erased. During the cloning process, it displays CL IN and then the error message at the end. Unlike bug #3717. it does not hang during the process. This does seem to possibly be similar to bug#4871 but whether or not it is the same I can't say for certain.

I am able to program the device using the ICom software and uploading a clone image says "CL END" and the end of the process. It acts as if there is some sort of verification that is failing at the end.

I am seeing the same thing with the 20170329 daily build (the most recent one that doesn't throw a different error). So I found a copy of Chirp from last year on my Mac at work and did some experimentation with it and with the version at home (running on LinĊx Mint 18) and it seems that the problem can reliably be reproduced by modifying a file that uploads properly, either by pasting into it or apparently by changing one of the fields in the table.

As an example I am attaching two almost identical .img files. The one marked KNOWN_GOOD uploads properly to the radio and was generated with the older version of Chirp (from 20160629 I think). The one marked BAD should be identical with one minor difference: O changed the Name field in row 101 from "JOTA L" to "WA7HJR L". Hopefully a side-by-side comparison of these two files can give some clue as to why the second one fails.
