Bug #6997
closedNewer Model of Baofeng BF-888s - Cannot Read/Change Settings
100%
Description
Purchased 2 new BF-888s radios in August 2019. CHIRP (daily-20190817) downloads from radio and shows/writes changes to frequencies in memory menu without issues. However, settings menu is completely blank. Attempted to write an image to the new radio from an older model BF-888s that CHIRP works correctly with, but radio settings were unchanged (i.e. still blank). Found a version of Baofeng's programming software online "2013-3-7 BF-480_888_BFE90_V6_490_568_U3_K5_U8_BF-R5.zip". This software was able to read/modify/write to the new radios without problems. After writing the modified settings to the new radio, CHIRP was suddenly able to read the new settings, but still could not write any changes back to the radios.
Sounds like this problem is similar to previously reported Bug #6587, but more severe.

Hi Marshall,
When you say settings do you mean frequency, tone, offset, power, etc
Or do you mean Voice Prompt / Language / Scan / Vox ?
I might have the same issue as you but on a Radioddity GA-2S

GA-2S,
I am referring to the "Settings" menu which changes the Voice Prompt, Language, Scan, VOX, etc. Until I used the Baofeng software on these new BF-888s radios, this menu was completely blank after downloading from the radio. There was no text in the box, nothing at all to click on. After using Baofeng's software to adjust some of these settings (like language, which was set to Chinese on these radios)and uploading them back to the radio, CHIRP magically was able to see the setting and populated the menu as normal. However, CHIRP will not upload any changes to the settings to these radios.

Hi Marshall,
I have seen this behavior in CHIRP, when a setting is "out of range" (as specified by the driver) then various options/settings go missing but there's no popup or warning about such events.
Do you have a link to the software that you used to program the 888 radio? I'd like to check the serial data going out over the wire with the radios I have here.
If you don't have a link, would you be willing to test a modification I have made to CHIRP to solve this problem? (Currently awaiting dev feedback on the change but it's quite simple)

I should have stated that I have seen the empty settings window before and that the "modification" I have made to CHIRP is not to solve that issue but to solve the issue of settings not taking affect on the radio.

@GA-2S,
I found the following link to the program at: https://www.409shop.com/shop_displaynews.php?id=292&locate=3
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B8BGmr-vYNsbUlR5SmE0anloTU0
This downloads "2013-3-7 BF-480_888_BFE90_V6_490_568_U3_K5_U8_BF-R5.zip" which is 3.62 MB
I have attached a copy of this file if you do not want to download it yourself.
Let me know if you have any further questions.

Thanks for the links Marshall.
Dave, thanks for also posting back on that package working for your 888s as well.
I have a patch submitted to the developers and awaiting feedback. To the best of my knowledge, there is some hesitation because we don't have enough data points on older 888 models to know if there are any side effects of my proposed change.

@GA-2S,
Thanks for the patch! It successfully allowed setting changes to be uploaded/saved to my radios.
