Bug #7653
closedReturn of Not Seeing/Writing Setting Data for Newer Baofeng Model BF-888S
100%
Description
I just got in a fresh batch of BF888S radios and was unable to see the settings data using the latest version of CHIRP 20200213 (settings screen is totally blank and without fields or labels, nada). Tried to write a known good BF888S image to the radio, but was not successful. Light on radio blinked like it was uploading to radio, but there was no change in radio settings (radio came set to chinese language which didn't change after trying to set it to English). This is very similar to issue 6997 that I reported earlier and may be a regression in the program. If it would help, I could make a radio available to a programmer for a deeper inspection of its firmware. Or if you have some utilities to inspect the radio that would help diagnose the problem, I would be glad to run that.

Used Baofeng OEM software "2013-3-7 BF-480_888_BFE90_V6_490_568_U3_K5_U8_BF-R5.zip" to successfully read and write to this batch of new radios (copy of this software was uploaded to issue #6997). Therefore, there is no urgency on my part to solve this issue in CHIRP. It is curious that something has changed in this radio model so that CHIRP no longer works, while the 7 year old version of Baofeng's software continues to work without problems.

My patch got pulled as a suspected regression and I haven't rebased it yet.
Now that there is an issue open I'll work on it this week. :D

I have submitted the following patch to the development mailing list to get re-implemented.
For the record, removing this patch did not help anyone in Issue #7067 https://chirp.danplanet.com/issues/7067
