How did you build this cable? The VX-8 doesn't have any 2.5mm socket you can use for programming?
There's a six pin socket on top of the radio which requires a special connector.
Also, do you mean with "same USB device" physically the same or the same type?
Could you please also provide a debug log as described in the Wiki: "How To Report Issues"? Thanks!

Cable built according to VX-8GE manual, page 162. The vx-8ge/r doesent have this special plug on the top, it has a 2.5mm trs jack on the side. Using the same physical usb device as for my baofeng's diy ftdi module with exchangeable plugs.

I have exactly the same issue. Yaesu VX-8GE, 2,5mm TRRS jack, FTDI module from eBay set to 3V3. I see "Clone" dialog in CHRIP, the moment I press the BAND button on the radio, the CHIRP dialog changes to "Cloning radio", so apparently it recognizes some data RX. Then fails with an error.
If I open putty with 9600Bd, I see following upon pressing BAND on the radio:

Hans Oak, a debug log would still help. When you get a chance?
Marek Kudlacz, is that FTDI module you have genuine? The "stuttering" you can see in the log might point to the driver feeding the FTDI chip some garbage because it found it to be a fake. If that module was under $20, then it's likely a fake.

I am assuming it is a fake one since it is on an USB serial module from eBay. I have just now tried with a CP2102 module which I sucessfully used to program an Icom professional radio with. It does not work either.
