It appears to be just another 16-channel UHF Baofeng radio. Do you have the OEM programming software? Have you already tried the BF-888 selecton?

  • Subject changed from Baofeng BF U9 to Baofeng BF-U9
  • Target version set to chirp-legacy

Please let us know whether the BF-888 driver does work for you so that we can add the BF-U9 to the list of Supported Radios. Thanks!

The BF-888 doesn't work, error is: Radio retuned unknown identification string.
Do the BF-888 and clones have a Display? The BF-U9 has a Display and buttons to change channels, also channel dual watch.

In this case it might be helpful if you added a debug log as described in the Wiki: "How To Report Issues". Collect this log while trying the BF-888 driver. Thanks.

I have gotten my hands on a set of Baofeng BF-T8 radios and have been doing some experimenting with developing a driver module. I would be interested in finding out which of the other radio variants mentioned above can be read using this demo driver module. To use it for testing...

1 save demo driver module to a convenient location
2 load CHIRP
3 click "Help" and enable "Enable Developer Functions"
4 click "File"
5 click "Load Module" and then locate and load the demo driver saved in step 1

The CHIRP background will be red to indicate a driver module is being used. Loading a driver module this way does not permanently modify your CHIRP installation in any way. Once you close CHIRP you must load the demo driver module again to access its features.

Use the Vendor: Baofeng / Model: BF-T8 selections to attempt a download from your radio. If successful, attach a CHIRP radio images file (*.img) to this issue with a mention of the actual Vendor/Model of the radio used. If the attempt results in an error (not related to a programming cable issue), create a "clean" debug.log file and attach it to this issue. The steps to create a "clean" debug.log file are...

  1. Close CHIRP
  2. Open CHIRP
  3. Cause error
  4. Close CHIRP

Kenny, this ticket is about a Baofeng BF-U9 (apparently identical with Baofeng BF-T8, Retevis RT16, Radiodiddty PR-T1). Is the Arcshell AR-8 also related?

Exactly the same as my BF-T8 as far as I can tell. Just another one of many variants. I'm about ready to submit a patch to support the Baofeng BF-T8 and Arcshell AR-8, but I am sort of waiting to see if I get some feedback from David and Marc so I can add their model(s) as well.

Patch submitted. It adds support for the Baofeng BF-T8 (the radio that I have here). The Baofeng BF-U9 and Arcshell AR-8 are each supported as an alias.

Added Radioddity PR-T1 and Retevis RT16 to list of Supported Radios. Also marked the Baofeng BF-U9 and the Arcshell AR-8 as T8 variants.

I didn't add them because they being mentioned as a variant was only speculation.

The Radioddity PR-T1 does not use the same programming software and looking at the captured cloning process I would not expect it to work with this driver. I chatted with Radioddity briefly hoping that they would offer a radio for testing but that didn't happen.

The Retevis RT16 might work but the OEM software was enough different from the Baofeng software that I didn't want to chance it. I haven't had time to discuss it with my contact at Retevis to see if they would provide a sample.
