Description

Currently running CHIRP daily-20211216 on two Notebooks, one Win 7 and other Win 10. Been awhile since update. Attempted to run most recent update. BOTH will not update. Multiple "cannot write file" errors when running Installer. If I "Ignore" all the files the Installer completes but program still shows version 20211216..... Two different Notebooks, same error. Old CHIRP version has worked fine until today.

Hi Dennis,

It sounds like CHIRP might be running the the background while you're attempting to update the version. You'll need to ensure that all CHIRP windows are closed out (maybe even try a restart) and then launch the installer. Windows will sometimes "protect" running or open files so they don't get swapped out and cause unexpected behavior.

Let us know if closing CHIRP and/or the reboot helps with the "cannot write file" error.

Thank you kindly for the prompt reply. When I first open CHIRP on my Win 7 notebook, I get New Updated Daily Version available.. go to download page and wait for download. When I ran the Installer, that was the error msg I got. Did try a few more times after restart each time. Same thing... so now I try my Win 10 notebook, but this time I simply Deleted the entire CHIRP directory. Restart and go to Download page. Wait for download and run Installer........ This time no Errors. Re verify COM Port for data cable. Run CHIRP to image my UV 5R and all worked well... on my Win 10 notebook. Now only issue is Imaging my new Radioddity QB25. Their data cable is giving me grief but that's another whole new thing for me to figure out. Their CPS software just won't run at all for me, however I did see CHIRP may work.. We'll see. Thank you for your help and advice.

That is your mistake. When you click [OK] in the prompt for a "New Updated Daily Version available..", when your browser takes you to the CHIRP website CHIRP is still running in the background. While CHIRP is running there are files that are locked and cannot be replaced by the installer (hence the error message). You must close all running instances of CHIRP before you can run the installer.

See this "How to Avoid the Loading Error":https://www.miklor.com/COM/UV_CHIRP_Load.php page on the "Miklor":https://www.miklor.com/ website.

Thank you Mr. Fuller and Mr. Unroe. I have followed your advise and simply went to the Daily Download Page without opening CHIRP. Downloaded Daily Update Today and all went well on both Notebooks. Able to Read/Write to my UV 5R without issue. I did have to look for and change the COM Port for the Radioditty QB-25 to work with CHIRP. That also allowed me to Read/Write to the QB-25 however it took over 4 minutes to write to radio but it did work. All in all, I am very glad to use only one Software program for both radios. This is quite an accomplishment for a technologically challenged 70 yr old just getting back into the hobby. Thank you.
