Bug #9826
openUV-5R Baofeng, new model locks up when programmed for "No Transmit".

Description
The individual channel "off" or no transmit works on OLD UV-5R.
On new radio just arrived, if you PTT on a channel set for off, the red tx light comes on (no RF being transmitted) and the radio LOCKS UP.
You mus power-cycle to restore it.
I assume Baofeng changed something?

What happens if you program a TX disabled channel using the factory software?

It has FW BFB298 and is definitely a 2m/440 rig.
I cannot seem to find the correct Factory software to try for that FW.
Can you post a link? I'm running Windows 7.

Also, I have the RTSystems software, same issue, I have a query into them too.

I have the same issue with a new Pofung UV-5RE Plus.
Setting channels to "off" in CHIRP causes the following g behavior. When attempting to transmit on an "off" channel, the radio lights up the red tx led, and the display backlight turns orange.
When you release the PTT, the radio remains in this state.
I checked, and it does not appear to transmit any RF, but it does require the radio to be turned off and back on to clear the error state.
On older radios, you would get a beep and the radio would return to normal operation.

I can also confirm. Recently ordered two UV-5R... behavior is just as Ron LaBorde states. Unit get stuck "transmitting", and must be turned off to get out of this state. Using the factory software (UV5R_NewOldEng_v12 from https://baofengtech.com/product/uv-5r/) and removing the "TX Frequency" will cause the stated effect (tx lockup). If "TX Frequency" is populated, the unit functions normally on that channel. As a sidenote, if the unit is set to display channel+frequency, when I transmit on a channel with no TX Frequency, the frequency on the display changes to "666.666" and locks up as stated.

This appears to be a bug in the radio's firmware. The workaround should be to not program TX disabled channels.

I have reproduced this issue on a UV-5R with firmware BFB298, and failed to reproduce it on another UV-5R with firmware BFB297.

Back in the early days of UV-5R radios, even numbered firmware versions were an indication that the radio was a VHF/220 model supporting frequencies in the 136-174 MHz and 220-260 MHz ranges. Could it be you are programming your radio with unsupported UHF frequencies?

My BFB298 UV-5R does not let me key in 223.5MHz in VFO mode, I don't think it supports 220-260Mhz, idem for my BFB297 UV-5R. To test your second question, I programmed 446.000MHz as the sole frequency in memory, again with duplex set to off. The radio exhibited the same behavior as mentioned previously (radio gets stuck on TX when PTT is pressed, but does not transmit). Idem with 146.52MHz.
The BFB297 radio behaves as expected and does not lock up in TX in the same situation, it simply does nothing when you press PTT with duplex off.
I think it's likely that you are right and this is a bug in the firmware. Is there any more data I can provide from both radios that could help us figure out if this is something that can be fixed in CHIRP? (before we give up altogether)

Hi guys.
Do you have any update on the above? I am experiencing the same issues with my UV-5R and F8-HP[UV-5R 8W]. on Frequencies bellow 125.997 and above 178.177 which is just outside of standard VHF presets, it gets stuck in TX/stuck transmitting. with CHIRP I changed it to VHF 090.000 - 250.000. I can select it on the radio. Also 250.00 - 450.000 on UHF is programmed and I can select. No issues with it getting stuck staying transmitting on those frequencies.
Thank you
Erik

Hey Erik, If you go to "view" and "show extra fields" you can see duplex is set to off. If you change to the blank option it prevents the lockup. I wasn't able to get the oem software to download right but after reading the previous replies I made an educated guess and got a radio back to operation.
