Dear reader,

If bought myself a pair of beautiful baofeng UV-16 radios.
Unfortunately I can't find any way to program them in the software or supported devices.

  • Status changed from New to Feedback

To add support it generally requires physical possession of the radio, the proper programming cable and the factory programming software.

CHIRP works with UV-16 if you pick Baofeng BF-F8HP in the dialog. Maybe there are some incompatibilities so try at your own risk.

Please let us know whether the BF-F8HP driver worked for you. Thanks!

Yes it will work with the UV-16 Pro Mate. You need to change the COM channel to 1. This was verified with a Blue Max cable and the $3 cable.

The driver worked from what I can see. Managed to download and upload channels.

When I tried to change the welcome message I got a message that the welcome message can not be altered as there is a chance it can brick the radio.

Is the UV-16 in the roadmap for chirp-next? Would really prefer to have a proper selection for UV-16 instead of selecting Baofeng BF-F8HP.

Selecting Radioddity UV-5RX3 also works.

Yes. But you want to match the capability of the radio. Otherwise you may not have access to programming some of the radio's capabilities.

  • 2 TX power levels, 2 bands: use Baofeng / UV-5R
  • 3 TX power levels, 2 bands: use Baofeng / BF-F8HP
  • 2 TX power levels, 3 bands: use Radioddity / UV-5RX3

After monkey-hacking the PL2023TA from a reddit post, I was able to successfully use my UV-82 image to upload to my new UV-16. I am using a legacy Baofeng brand programming cable and did not want to wait for a new Wimpdoze 11 cable when I have a new radio sitting here begging to be programmed.

Backstory done: I was able to upload my existing image without too much fanfare, though it requires two attempts to connect everytime I upload or download the unit.

That being said, I used the BF-F8HP as listed above, but my PC/cable combo used com6 channel instead com1 channel. On newer PCs, the channel can vary by which USB port used, etc.

You might download the chip check tool if you are using the PL/Prolific series of cables. It will verify what com channel you have been assigned. I originally knew where to look by digging into the Device Manager and checking the port assignment.

I am somewhat miffed that the unit includes a USB-C port for charging but is not usable for programming. What an oversight!!!

I hope this helps someone else not spend multiple hours trying to route around the mulberry bush to get their radios radioing.
