Description

I used CHIRP 20120812 to program my Baofeng UV-5R and today find out!
1) when I try to transmit - nothing happens ( display remains dark - nothing changes in display)
2) I attach headphones - the same problem - nothing transmits out
3) I switch to FM radio mode - listen to radio and then press PTT button - it switches to chanel mode
4) I reset radio - no changes.
No I did not transmit without antenna.
Looks like radio even did not try to transmit anything.

After reading bug Bug #210 I managed to resolve radio, but - I did not see welcome screen and even in Settings==> Advanced settings ==> Dual watch is disabled - on display I see "S" witch means it is enabled.
Thats all for starts.

  • Target version deleted (0.2.3)
  • Chirp Version changed from 0.2.2 to daily

I'm not clear on this. You followed the procedure in #210 and restored the radio to a working state, right? Are you saying that programming it again will cause it to go into a bad state again?

I followed #210 and it partially works, but after 2 days an using CHIRP - it's same problem - radio is not transmitting - just bep when pressing PTT key. I guess Problem starts when I try to download from radio.

  • Subject changed from Baofeng UV-5R not transmitting ( bricked) to Baofeng UV-5R not transmitting
  • Description updated (diff)

If it's beeping when you transmit, then it's not bricked. Please don't use that terminology unless you're sure. It scares people.

Bricked means "completely non-functional and not fixable".

Dan,

I'm experiencing a somewhat similar issue: initially radio connected OK and I was able to read config and write it back (with a slight change). But after that I no longer able to even read radio config - it says radio doesn't respond. Initially I thought cable or a connector went bad, however that's not the case: when I run terminal at 9600 and power on the radio while keeping the [exit] button pressed - radio displays "READING" (I imagine this is some sort of "recovery" mode to restore bad config), it starts spiting a character on terminal every second - so the link is OK.

Please advise!

just to be clear - I know that one have to press the connector really hard, so I did that and I did put it in the memory / mode A.

Can you attach your image and debug log please?

In my experience, the radio has absolutely no recovery mode or even awareness that the memory image is incorrect. It is willing to accept anything (even garbage) in the memory upload happily. However, even when I've trashed the entire memory, it is always willing to read in a new image after that.

Have you tried programming with the baofeng software to see how it behaves?

baofeng software - also would not detect the radio.
I'm attaching the image, though I'm not sure if it's the last one I tried (after which I had issues), or the first one... sorry :(
Right now the radio would not show any signs of activity if I connect to it via terminal in memory or freq mode or any of a/b modes. I don't know what's the format of commands, so maybe it's just awaiting for some control character before it gives a feeback...
I'll give the cable another try tonight - maybe it's a cable/connector issue after all (for example TX line is dead, while RD is OK so that's why I see some garbage in "READING" mode)

btw, Dan - do you know anything about that "READING" mode? If my issue is because the config is broken and that "READING" mode is awaiting for a full dump to be loaded - maybe that's something to try if I know how

I was just going through the past issues and came across this.

Is it possible your UV5R menu item 23 is set to ON.
This is BCL (Busy Channel Lockout)
If the channel is busy, your TX will not work.
Make sure BCL is set to OFF.

Just a thought...

Hendrik,

Backup your current channels and settings to a CHIRP .img file. Please email a copy to me: uv5r [at] kc9hi [dot] net

Go here and download the "BFBnnn Reset.img" file that matches your firmware version.

http://kc9hi.dyndns.org/uv5r/programming/CHIRPrecovery/

Load the 'reset' image file into CHIRP. Load your 'backup' image file into CHIRP. You should have 2 tabs showing in CHIRP.

Copy & paste the channels from the 'backup' tab to the 'reset' tab. Compare and edit the 'reset' tab's settings with the 'backup' tab's settings. Upload the 'reset' tab to your radio.

Test the radio. It should be working now. Don't forget to save you new settings to a file. Do not upload your original 'backup' image to your radio or it will return your radio to the way it was.
