Description

For nearly a couple of years now, I've been able to program my Baofeng UV-5XP, but I recently bought a couple of new ones, and now it won't program them with a previously saved .img file because it reports the firmware is N5R3407XXX, but should be HN5RV011XXX. When I try reading the radio first, the Settings tab is left blank.

Lenovo, Windows 10 Home, same cable as has been using for many months.

This is by design and as expected. The firmware versions are different so the "old" .img must not be directly uploaded into the new radios.

You have to download from the new radio to get a compatible, then either import the saved .img file into that tap or load the saved .img file into a second tab and copy-and-paste the channels from the second tab to the first tab and then upload to your radio.

Thanks for looking at the question, Jim. Sounds like you only read the first sentence. The Settings are blank when I first attempt to download from radio.

According to Bernhard Hailer, I should continue this discussion here.

Could you please support the Baofeng UV-5XP with the latest firmware? According to #7535, CHIRP used to work with them, but the newest firmware now prevents CHIRP from working with it.

Noji, I think the new versions are supported. However, you were trying to upload an image which was created with an older firmware version, and Chirp won't write that into your newer radios to protect you from a potential loss: different firmware versions may use a different memory layout, i.e. you could brick it.

What you can do is to download an image from your newer radios, then import the older image into it, and finally to upload the result back into your new radios.

I'll close this as resolved. Let us know if that's premature, and we'll reopen it.
