Description
Hello all,
I am currently getting into Ham Radio and purchased a Baofeng GT-5TP (yep of ebay). I have previously used CB and as a Scout remember doing some amateur radio (25+ years ago).
I have downloaded and tried to connect to CHIRP but was unable. I looked at other threads and then downgraded the driver for my USB cable in case it was a fake chip. See below pic.
I have attached the log for my attempt to connect with the downgraded USB driver cable (using model UV-82HP) , it was still unable to connect. I have also tried to connect using other models in case the firmware on my radio was for 2 power settings instead of 3 (BF-F8HP)
I have the following from the radio.
On and [3 button] Firmware - N82301
On and 6 button - 160408N
I have tried to look at other issues on the bug treads but at a loss to fix this one. Please advise.
I also am a first time CHIRP user.
Regards,
Matthew

Hello,
I have completely same issue, but I bought Baofeng UV-82HP 8W version (in a store in my country). I got same numbers as you on 3/6 key, and also in chirp log i see FW version as N5R2407BFB297, which leads me to a fake radio. This FW version, if chirp actually loaded it from radio, is similar to UV-5R N5R firmwares (those are known to have fake 8W versions labeled as Baofeng).
For reference:
http://www.miklor.com/uv5r/UV5R-Firmware.php
http://www.miklor.com/UV82/UV82-Firmware.html - I should be getting these numbers.
Seems to be other HW inside then original, also after inspection my model has split PTT buttons, no logo stamped on top behind the flashlight, different sticker under battery.
I have this sticker under battery - https://uk.passion-radio.com/1206-thickbox_default/uv-82.jpg
Should be somewhat like this - http://www.km4fmk.com/images/82HP/82HPbatt.jpg

Hi there Martin,
I too have read many webpages looking at fake/real etc but seem to think they all really come from the same place. I have taken a picture of the back of my radio but blanked out some of the serial number. It looks different to the one you have shown. The radio can receive fine. I can hear the local repeaters well. Have not tried to transmit as I yet to sit my licence exam. I have noticed that the menu settings match up with the UV-82HP despite little description provided in the user manual.
I hope someone with programming/code experience will look at my debug log to work out what was wrong. My debug log also has the 'N5R2407BFB297' reported I think from the radio. I also notice that the radio reboots (turns off then on) when trying to connect to CHIRP.
On a side note. Pictures look like an extra battery could be easily sourced?

The fake/real debate seams to also look at the two manufacturers Baofeng Tech vs Baofeng radio. The sticker has Baofeng Electron Co.LTD which has previously be mentioned as "real" when related for other models, but does not identify who made it.
There is no reference on the radio or user manual which manufacturer actually it came from. Not even a webpage in the manual. However, I have used the QR code on the side of the box and it linked to a Baofeng Radio webpage! So not sure if this confirms a manufacturer.

Hi Matt.
I had the same issue with one of my two GT-5TP radios. One of them had FW: N82301. That one did not respond correctly to CHIRP. But, it (FW: N82301) did work correctly with the factory software.
I purchased two GT-5TP radios from the same vendor. The second GT-5TP came with FW: N82303 and that one works fine with the 20170217 build of CHIRP that I was using when I bought the radios.
Get the Factory software from "baofengtech.com" under the menu "Support -> Software" and look in the OEM VIP download section. The software name is "BaoFeng UV-82HP VIP Programming Software". It is not as good as CHIRP, but it will at least let you know whether your radio's programming cable is working or not.
Cheers ... Pete

As shown on the "supported models" list on the CHIRP home page, the UV-82HP model Baofeng GT-5TP should be selected.

This firmware version would indicate the radio would be a UV-5R style radio. Try selecting UV-5R.

Baofeng Tech is not a manufacturer. They are a 2-way radio dealer based in the USA. They sell Baofeng, Anytone and manufactured to their specificaitons line of BTech radios.

Hello all,
Thanks for helping out.
Just some feedback.
I did try selecting UV-5R and it did not work. It also came up with incorrect model selected
However,
I did come across the following chirp thread: http://chirp.danplanet.com/issues/4445#note-12
Issue #4445
I did exactly the same as Newton Harper (see below cut from other thread) and it worked.
I edited line 290 in uv5r_test_fix_for_HN5RV_firmware.py:
from: BASETYPE_UV82HP = ["N82-3", "N823"]
to: BASETYPE_UV82HP = ["N82-3", "N823", "N5R2"]
IT WORKED FOR MY RADIO!!
The only problem is not being able to set the three power levels. If anyone needs to see the image then let me know but the following was revealed:
Checked out Firmware Message 1 :N5R2407
Firmware Message 2: BFB297
Hope this can help out others.
Also can any one tell me if chirp can set the bandwith specific for a memory channel (as I Wide/narrow options)?
From some research it looks like it could be saved from the radio if the memory was made in that bandwith, I am not sure if it recalls that when selected.

I'm glad it worked for you. The problem with doing this without removing "N5R2" from "BASETYPE_UV5R", CHIRP could detect the saved image as for a UV-5R and the image then won't upload to your radio. So to be save, you should do this. But it would render the driver inoperative for many UV-5R type radios.

I don't know if this is helpful information, so my apologies if it is inappropriate.
I have exactly the same problem as described in this article with a 2 new UV-82HP.

Hi all,
I just got my first Baofeng UV-82HP radio and encountered the same issue as described above. The radios and programming cable were bought from a local dealer in Canada. The sticker under the battery looks exactly as the posted image above labeled "https://uk.passion-radio.com/1206-thickbox_default/uv-82.jpg". The serial number starts with 17UV... . Button 3: N82301; button 6 : 160408N.
Computer OS: High Sierra 10.13.1
Programming cable: WOUXUN PCO-001 USB HAND HELD RADIO PROGRAMMING CABLE (TYT / Baofeng Compatible); driver: https://www.silabs.com/products/development-tools/software/usb-to-uart-bridge-vcp-drivers
Chirp built: CHIRP daily-20180115
Here is a more detailed description of what I did: After installing drivers and software, I first connected the programming cable, then started the software and followed the prompts to connect the radio in order to download an image off the radio (including setting the correct port and model). After starting the download I received an error message saying "Incorrect Model selected."
I have attached the debug.log.
Could someone provide an update if there is a solution to this problem? I don't have an image of the radio, so I think the solution described by Matt and in the following issue won't work: http://chirp.danplanet.com/issues/4445#note-12
Thanks for your help.
