Description
Hi,
Will there be support in the near future for the Wouxun KG-UV8H?
I installed the drivers and tried to read the radio but, kept getting an error. I had the correct comm port and tried to read my radio using all radios listed in the drop down menu.
Thanks for your help!

- Status changed from New to Feedback
- Target version set to chirp-legacy
Unfortunately, you are quite unspecific with your problem report. The list of Supported Radios contains a variety of Wouxun KG-UV8 variants; you should try to select them in Chirp and collect a debug log as described in the Wiki: "How To Report Issues". Please post it here.

Your radio simply doesn't respond - this looks like a cable / driver / connector issue. Please refer to these Wiki articles:
CableGuide
CableGuide FTDI OEM Cables
[RTSystemsCablesAndMavericks]
Windows notes: If you are using a generic cable with a Prolific chip, you will very likely need to downgrade your driver to version 3.2.0.0.
It can be found at http://www.miklor.com/COM/UV_Drivers.php
MacOS notes: this OS is apparently very picky about USB to Serial cables. From what I heard, only (genuine) FTDI-based cables can be made work.
On older MacOS versions, you must have the KK7DS Python runtime for Mac OSX installed. I don't have information yet what to do on new versions (like Big Sur).
Big Sur is a problem on its own, because basically all USB drivers need to be rewritten. FTDI is still working on it.
Also see MacOS Tips!
Linux notes: Linux generally is quite good with USB to Serial converter drivers. The most likely cause for grief is a connector which doesn't provide good electrical contact.
Bluetooth notes: connections often suffer from timing issues, please try a cable instead.

I bought the cable from "https://www.buytwowayradios.com/wouxun-pco-001.html" after seeing a few of the reviews stating it would work with CHIRP.
The cable works properly with the Wouxun software...I can read and write from the radio. Attached pics are of my Comm port, the cable, and the Wouxun software.

I am having same problem. works with Wouxun software to program but not Chirp. Thanks
Updated by Bernhard Hailer almost 4 years ago
When you just plug in the cable on its USB side to your computer while the Wouxun software is NOT running, what can you see in the Device Manager? Is the port properly recognized and the driver working? I see that it's a Silicon Labs CP210x chip; but when you open that device, does it say that it fully works? Maybe it helps to install the latest driver version. It is conceivable that the Wouxun software has its own driver code, tailored to their cable; in that case it may be required to get a new quality cable from other sources.

Yes sir, windows says it has the most up-to-date driver and it is working properly (with all other software closed). I also deleted the driver and re-installed…radio will not respond. I did read the reviews of the cable before buying and saw that several people were using it with CHIRP. Couldn't find anyone using my exact combo of UV8H and Windows 10 though. Any other ideas?
Thanks again for all of your help!

Hi,
Unfortunately the models KG-UV8E and KG-UV8D are not the same radio on the inside, they have a different programing schema, so for the KG-UV8H it's not unlikely that this have changed, again.
Then you have the message that the radio doesn't respond when you try it as a KG-UV8D/E
We (Chirp devs) need a radio to test or a way to get a serial log from they KG-UV8H getting programmed (read/write) with the OEM software.
That to start support; sending a radio to me is complicated (took 1 year with the KG-UV8E) as I live in Cuba, never the less if you can do it, please contact me on this forum.
For the serial port logging/sniffing you can use on of this software (Some is paid others free, others has a free period... make your pick for your OS version, better ones on top...)
- https://www.aggsoft.com/es/serial-port-monitor/download.htm
- http://www.serial-port-monitor.com/
If any of you can take a log (full log with hexadecimal dump, etc) of a download (reading from radio) session and a write (uploading to the radio) session with the OEM software it will give us a starting point.
Cheers Pavel (KG-UV8E driver author)

Great!
That read/writes logs are good and have all the start info, but they are not from a complete read/write sessions, eltima .spm logs are usualy several 100kb and some times a couple of Mb of size.
Here you have some instructions to get a full log with meaningful info for me (Developer of the KG-UV-8E driver)
- Download the OEM software, aka the software from Wuoxun for your radio.
- Fire the serial monitor and configure it to sniff traffic.
- Connect your radio & interface and fire the OEM software, do a full read of the radio.
- Get sure you have a lot of serial traffic, then save the .spm file as a "read from radio"
- Don't close the OEM software.
- New session o the Serial monitor (clean start, close it and fire it again, configure it on the port etc).
- Use the data loaded on the OEM software and write it back to the radio with no change in settings/channels/etc (important)
- Get sure you have a lot of serial traffic, then save the .spm file as a "write to radio"
Upload the files here and let me do the magic...
This is the start point, Develop a driver for a radio I don't have at hand is hard but not impossible (I have done it for several BTECHs, the KG-UV8E, BF-T1, etc) so more testing ahead will be needed.
I'm taking the driver developing task officially, but will need help form users like you.
Cheers, Pavel CO7WT.

Nope, same as the previous.
The radio did not answered, you need to record a full working session, one in which the OEM software get the channel data etc.
That may take a few tries, or even poking a few configs.
Without full logs I'm stranded here.

Sent data is good!!!
I processed and matched parts of it against the KG-UV8E and looks pretty similar, first impressions:
- Very similar to KG-UV8E, just slight changes at a glance (this is just about the communication protocol)
- Payload is encoded (just like the 8E) testing is needed yet to check if it's similar to the 8E and we can decode it.
More news on the night after a good work session with the data.
Cheers, Pavel.

So we have valid decodes and some have invalid packet decodes, that's with the KG-UV8E packet decoder scripts. that's a huge advance.
I will be working at night on the bare-bones driver to see id it's a clone or as similar to other radio to make it a clone and not re-discover the wheel.
Funny fact: Internally it identify itself as a "KG-UV8D-B" so that's our starting point.

Update:
After a few hours playing with the data I have found a few interesting things:
- Memory layout is different from the KG-UV8D and the KG-UV8E or KG-UV8T (despite identifying itself as a UV8D at low level)
- I have to check it against other Wuoxun models in Chirp
- I have almost completed the data to build a "just to get a full image" driver.
- With the first real radio dump we will be able to compare the OEM image from the software to the real image from chirp
So your help will be needed soon, stay tuned.
Cheers, Pavel.

Update, attached is a early develop driver.
WARNING!: This driver is meant to fulfill just one goal: Download a full radio image.
Even if the driver seems to work, DO NOT TRY TO MODIFY OR UPLOAD THE DATA TO THE RADIO.
You has been warned.
Disclaimer set, let's move on
Get a full radio image seems possible now with the download logs you kindly uploaded. Now we need to validate it and get a full image to start working on.
How to keep help us to make it on Chirp, do this steps as stated, there is no harm or brick possibility if you follow the instructions.
Get the last version of Chirp¶
Download the attached dev driver to your PC.¶
Fire chirp, go to Help and tick "Enable developer functions"¶
Go to File and then "Load Module", and load the attached file¶
Connect the interface to the PC and to the radio (must be powered on)¶
Try to read the radio (yes the KG-UV8H will be shown under Wuoxun)¶
If all goes well you will see the progress bar for the download and it will finish (No matter what is the result, and error or full display of the channels of the radio)¶
Please go to File and +save that image and post it here+.¶
Get the debug.log +and post it here+ (see https://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/How_to_report_issues there you will learn how to find your chirp debug.log)¶
Again, even if it shows your radio channel data: do not try to modify it and/or upload the data back to the radio.
We just want to get a full radio image dump
Note: If you can do this process and somebody already did it (uploaded the image) don't stop, make it and upload your image, the more the better for me, that will speed up the process and will allow us to detect possible variations on early stages.
Thanks in advance, the ball is on your side.

Great!
Parsing the image right now, will provide soon a OEM image to program and dump in chirp with instructions.
At a glance it seems like a variation of the UV8E with some variations in the image positions...
Thanks!

Ok, Attached there is a new dev driver, this one fix the settings part.
Definitively the radio is a variant of the UV8E without the 222Mhz band as much of the settings match perfectly at a glance.
In fact it identifies internally as a "KG-UV8D-B" while the UV8E identifies as "KG-UV8D-A". So much of the work is done already.
I just need to confirm that the data in Chirp matches the data in the radio and as I don; t have the radio I need your Help.
Pick a moment to dedicate at least 20 minutes to this tasks¶
See the previous post about load the attached dev driver on Chirp.¶
Do a download the info in chirp and save the image.¶
Do a download with the OEM software and save the image.¶
Take a time to compare the results between Chirp data and the EOM software data, please write down what is wrong and why in Chirp against the OEM software. Also what new settings are missing on Chirp.¶
Post both images (chirp's & OEM) and the list of discrepancies to this issue for me to process.¶
Also, I watched a few videos and read the manual but can't clarify is the radio has 2 or 3 power levels, (L/H or L/M/H) please clarify that.
Warning: Please do not attempt an upload the data to the radio in Chirp. I will be working on that part in the meanwhile...
Cheers Pavel CO7WT.

That's a good guess, it's not specified in the English manual. Interestingly, the international version may be 10W. Buytwowayradios where I purchased it claims they had Wouxum dial back the wattage in the USA for safety.

Work Mode vs Radio Mode (change field to "work mode" as this term is used in the manual)
Repeater tone = off vs Enabled (wrong)
SC-QT = RX & TX QT / DT-MEM vs All (wrong/different)
That's all for the main settings pages - have a look at the other pages as there are some significant changes needed.

Hi, sorry for the delay...
To resume the development I need a chirp image of your radio AND a OEM software codeplug file of the same radio. That will allow me to work without the radio at hand (Yes I don't have one of those, and yes: it's possible to work it out against a OEM software codeplug some times)
- See https://chirp.danplanet.com/issues/8803#note-18 to know how to get the image with Chirp
- Use the OEM provided software to read the radio and save it as the OEM software does
- Please name the files with the exact variant you have (I see the software handles the KG-UV8H & KG-UV8G variants) and your call for example
- CO7WT_KG-UV8H)_chirp
- CO7WT_KG-UV8H_oem
- Don't stop if other users has uploaded its files, upload yours: more files means more use cases and more data...
- If you are concerned about privacity of your data just email the files to pavelmc@gmail.com
Cheers.

Thanks, I will start to process it today in the afternoon.
If any other ham/user want's to upload their files, they are welcomed: more files mean more use cases and more variety for me to catch the details.
Cheers

Hi
Any progress on this one?
Yes, slow but progress.
I'm still mapping the channel and setting data to see if I use the 8D or the 8E as base as there are some issues, but life goes on my country... so please be patient..

Hello Pavel!
I'm brand new to Ham and have just purchased a Wouxun KG-UV8H along with the RT Systems programming cable. Wanted to ask if I could help any by loading your latest test "image" file and do some testing? I've got a Mac and don't want to use the Window's programming software.
Also, thanx for the work your doing on this, especially living in another country!
Have an awesome day!
Joseph

Joseph 'et al.'
Sadly, the COVID waves has impacted everybody life in a way or another, in my case I'm getting less and less free time, kids, country rampant inflation, return to normal, etc.
I got COVID recently, and I'm just getting back to work with a huge backlog of issues to do with clients, etc. Bottom line, I'm busy as hell by this time. I plan to dedicate a time for this and other radios I have borrowed from a local friend, but it will be not before my planned vacation time in December.
I will notify all of you in this thread when that happens, or earlier if time permits.

Greetings Pavel, hoping you are feeling better. You're in our thoughts and prayers. I know this is off topic and were not 'supposed' to say this stuff but iver mectin worked for us and knocked COVID right out. Nevertheless, hope your well and let us know when you get back around to the KG-UV8H. We might be able to get a radio to you if needed. Stay happy and healthy friend.

I wanted to add a note of encouragement (Get Well Soon, Pavel!), and share an observation.
I've played with the kguv8h.py file to try to talk to my KG-935G and it mostly works. However, I have noticed some odd behavior:
When I program DCS tones (CTCSS seems fine), it gets written to the radio in an odd way, which in the on-screen menu shows as very strange values (e.g. ":76"). When I read from radio using the (terrible Wouxun OEM software), what I see is that the fields for RX & TX "CTCSS/DCS" are populated with the "TX Frequency. for example: in the attached screenshot, channels 605-608 had DPL tones in CHIRP, while the others had CTCSS tones in CHIRP. Is there anything I else can provide to help track down & resolve this issue? Many thanks, Patrick

Hi to all, so orry for the long delay.
Today a ham contacted me about this driver, I had completely forgot about it; sorry for that, but not any more.
The ham informed me that he is willing to donate a radio for the driver support, that's great news!
I will review all the previous work to resume it, and will be surfing the shipping process, as I live in Cuba... it's hard, you can just ship a ham radio item, just like any parcel... but there are ways.
Stay tuned.

Buytwowayradios.com has agreed to support development of a driver for this radio. I will begin work as soon as I receive the radio. It should be relatively quick as it is very si.ilar to the 935G.

KG-UV8H Beta 1¶
This driver fully supports programming the KG-UV8H.
It can only be used in Chirp-Next. It does not work in the old Chirp-Legacy builds.
It includes interfaces to modify freq limits as well as to customize the bottom banner seen when TDR is OFF.
This driver is a combined driver that supports KG-935G, KG-935G Plus and the KG-UV8H
Let me know if you find any problems with this driver.
See LoadingTestModules for instructions on how to test.
